Raquel Pomplun was born on October 24, 1987, in San Diego, California, to Maria Lourdes and spent much of her childhood in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. She moved back to San Diego in 2000 at age 12, settling in Chula Vista. Of Mexican-American descent with Germanic and Spanish roots, she is fluent in English and Spanish, with Spanish as her first language. She has two older brothers and shares a close bond with her family. Pomplun attended Bonita Vista High School, where she was nicknamed “Rock,” and later studied biochemistry at Southwestern College, intending to pursue biochemical engineering. Her early interests included classical ballet, math, and science, where she excelled, claiming she could “solve almost any math problem.

Pomplun’s entry into Playboy began in 2012 when, encouraged by coworkers, she submitted photos to a casting call while modeling part-time to fund her college education. Within two weeks, she was invited for a test shoot and selected as Playmate of the Month for April 2012, appearing on the cover of the Sex & Music issue alongside Bruno Mars. In 2013, she became the first Mexican-American Playmate of the Year, a historic milestone celebrated at a luncheon at the Playboy Mansion.
